Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa, Death Record

       ©  Kathy Duncan, 2023

Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa died and was buried in Rancho de Taos in January 1834.

I located this record by noting the last record that I had that indicated he was alive, which was the 1832 baptism of his grandson:

4 March 1832 (baptized), age 5 days old, Casimiro Espinosa, son of Juan Ygnacio Espinosa and Ygnacia Gonzales, paternal grandparents: Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa and Juana Gertrudis, deceased; maternal grandparents: Juan Calletano Gonzales and Lorensa Rodrigues; godparents: Jose Dolores Tayfoya and Maria Dolores Tafoya, all residents of Rancho. [Source: NM Baptims (Taos) by Windham]

I went to the microfilm of Taos deaths on Family Search and started slowly scrolling from 4 March 1832 forward. One thing I have noticed is that a surprising number of people were baptized, married, and died in and around the little village of Taos every year. In spite of that, it did not take me long to locate the January 1834 death of Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa. Other than his death date, this does not reveal any new information. I already knew that he was the widower of Maria Gertrudis Gonzales.

Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa and Juana Gertrudis Gonzales were married by 1781, possibly earlier. The couple lived in near Santa Cruz de la Canada. Juana Gertrudis Gonzales was deceased by 1802. By 1800 Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa was living in Chimayo. In 1807 he may have fathered a child by Maria Concepcion Romero, a widow. By 1822 Pedro was a resident of San Francisco del Rancho.

An additional baptism may reveal a child that Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa had after the death of Juana Gertrudis Gonzales. Juana Gertrudis Gonzales was deceased by 1802 when she is mentioned as such in the marriage record of her daughter Maria Luz Espinosa. She may have been deceased as early as 1800 when Pedro Ygnacio Espinosa acts as a godfather without her:

DIEGO ANTONIO SANDOVAL and MARIA EULOGIA SALAZAR

© Kathy Duncan, 2012

Diego Antonio Sandoval, according to his marriage record, was the son of Rafael Sandoval and Polonia Fresquis. According to the 1850 Taos Co., NM census, he was born in Rio Arriba Co., NM. The 1816 census places his father’s family in Embudo of the San Juan Parish in present-day Rio Aribba Co, which matches both Diego Antonio Sandoval’s census statement and marriage record. This would seem to indicate that he was likely born in the San Juan Parish area in 1815 since he is one year old on that census.  He married Maria Eulogia Salazar on  27 Feb 1843 in Taos Co., NM. She was the daughter of Pedro Salazar and Maria Trinidad Valdez.
