SELPH PORTRAITS

© Kathy Duncan, 2013

One of the great joys that this blog brings me is the opportunity to meet "new" cousins and hear from "old" ones. Recently, my husband's first cousin, Marcella Dymale contacted me, and we have been sharing Selph genealogy. She shared these wonderful portraits of the Selph family with me. The woman in the portrait on top is identified as Lavinia Emily (Burton) Selph. Marcella's sister identified the man as Lavinia's son John W. Selph. However, both Marcella and I feel that he is probably John's father, Rev. Duncan Hyder Selph. Can anyone out there shed any light on this?

The portraits on the bottom are identified as being two sons of Lavinia (Burton) and Rev. Duncan Hyder Selph: John W. Selph and Duncan Hyder Selph Jr. I have seen other published pictures of John W. Selph, and feel that his identification is correct.

Thank you for sharing, Marcella!

  1. There's another picture on google of Duncan Hyder Selph, but he's a balding pencil necked guy which doesn't fit with these strong neched full haired bunch?

    1. Dave, I think the other picture of Duncan Hyder Selph that you are referring to is of Dr. Duncan H. Selph of Oklahoma. He was a son of Dr. Iley N. Selph, who was a brother to Rev. Duncan H. Selph in the picture above.

  2. As an update to the blog entry above, my husband's cousin Ken, who descends from Duncan Hyder Selph of Aztec, NM, has verified that his family also has a picture that they have always known to be Lavinia and Duncan Hyder Selph, and it is identical to the one above.

  3. I have other Selph photos to share. I am working on attaching them to my Ancestry.com genealogy.
