In June 1868 Solomon G.W. Dill, a Republican South Carolina legislator, was ambushed and killed by a person or persons unknown. Dill was known for his anti-slavery views, his opposition to literacy tests for voting, and had the support of freedmen. On the evening of 4 June 1868 just after sunset, a group of men hid around in the dark around the parameter of Dill's house and opened fire. Dill and his guest, Nestor Ellison, were killed. Dill's wife was wounded. Several residents of the Camden area were arrested for his murder and two were lynched. M.P. Kelley was among the men arrested. He was released in August of 1868. No one was ever charged and convicted for the death of Solomon G. W. Dill.
Those arrested maintained their innocence until they were all eventually released.
